Learn to help during disaster through Fire District 1 class

Snohomish County Fire District 1 is offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training for citizens interested in learning how they can help their community during a major disaster. Classes will meet twice a week beginning Sept. 14.

During a regional emergency such as an earthquake or other disaster, firefighters and other first responders may not be able to meet the heavy demand for their services. People will have to rely on each other to meet many lifesaving and life-sustaining needs.

CERT classes teach citizens about readiness, basic disaster first aid, search and rescue operations, how to put out small fires and the psychological effect of disasters.

Classes will meet every Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 14 through Oct. 12, 6-10 p.m., at the Fire District 1 Training Center, 12425 Meridian Ave., Everett.

The class is free; however, students will need to create (or purchase) a home disaster kit and purchase personal safety equipment to participate in some class activities. Preassembled kits will be available for purchase the first night of class.

Online registration is available at Fire District 1’s website: www.firedistrict1.org. For more information contact Tina Delisle, 425-551-1250, tinadelisle@firedistrict1.org.
