School starts in Edmonds Tuesday, Sept. 7 – tips for arriving safely

As schools open their doors Sept. 7 and students wait at bus stops or walk to school, the Edmonds School District appreciates everyone’s best efforts to make sure all students remain safe. Families eligible for bus transportation have received a card in the mail with their bus stop details, but routes for each school are posted on the district’s Transportation Department website.

Working with area law enforcement, the district has developed pedestrian and bicycle safety tips for its students.  Please share these tips with any families who may still be working on a plan for their student’s travels to and from school.

– Before school begins on Sept. 7, travel on foot or bike the same routes students will be taking to school to point out potential dangers and safe havens.
-Since there is safety in numbers, urge students to walk or bike with a buddy.
-Encourage your students to be highly visible by wearing bright, light-colored clothing.
-Urge your students to walk against traffic and ride bikes with the traffic whenever possible.
-Teach your students to cross streets only at marked crosswalks and to watch for turning vehicles. They should make eye contact with drivers and look both ways before stepping into the street.

  1. Excellent Tips. In Edmonds students frequently walk a few blocks until sidewalks are available near their schools. Or, in some cases non-existent walkways near schools. In those cases it’s helpful to discuss what to do if they MUST get out of the way fast. Help them see that stepping in a soggy ditch is better than getting hit by a car. Play the “What if” game and see what they come up with.
