Couture artist Luly Yang to be unveiled in paintings at Edmonds’ Cole Gallery

Patty wth Luly Yang

On April 9, nationally recognized pastel artist Patty Forte Linna will unveil a new show of paintings inspired by internationally renowned couture fashion artist Luly Yang at Cole Gallery in Edmonds. These paintings capture the life of one artist through the deft, subtle strokes of another. Two women communicate their quest for beauty and their passion for people — one with needle and thread, the other with pastel and paper.

Luly Yang’s celebrated couture designs have received numerous awards since she first started in 2000 including being named Best Couture Dress Designer for eight consecutive years in Seattle Bride magazine. Yang’s bridal and women’s formal couture designs display a quality of play and artistry not like many designers of her time. This is what drew Linna into Yang’s world.

“I was driving by her studio with my son,” Linna explained on why she chose to start this project, “I had to pull over and get out of the car. I was so mesmerized by what I saw.” The spellbound Linna stayed gazing into Yang’s studio window entranced along with every other passerby. “I had to ask myself, ‘why does something so profoundly beautiful speak to our souls, and why do we long to answer its call and create beauty in return?’”

Linna set off to answer this question through painting the life and contribution of Luly Yang. She spent long hours in Yang’s studio watching what others experienced through the designer and her designs. “Women just came to life as if they were being shown that the clothes only brought out the inherent beauty inside them. Luly is physically creating the very feelings I try to capture with my paintings,” Linna said.

“Good design can bring about social and environmental change,” Yang said. “Being surrounded by beautiful things evokes positive emotions. This, in turn, encourages us to live better and be better. My dream is to create a magical place for our guests, ourselves and our community.”

Linna painted live at Luly’s 2010 Fashion Tea and spends time photographing her, her couture and her runway shows. Her Cole Gallery show “Passion,” which runs from April 9-May 18, is a complete Luly show of paintings. The opening gala event will be from 6-9 p.m. April 9 with Yang and  Linna in attendance. In addition, three Luly Yang dresses will be on display.
