Mavs boys soccer team shellshocks Hawks in 7-0 win

By Quint Turner

The Maverick soccer team isn’t exactly known for its explosive offense, but Meadowdale dominated Mountlake Terrace 7-0 Wednesday night. Starting goalie Eric Henthorn and backup Mark Stienke shared the shutout,

The Mavericks started fast. Chris Prasanna would be the first to get on the scoresheet in the second minute, as he took a rebound off a Hawk defender that went to him and he put it top-shelf over starting Terrace goalie Enrique Hernandez. A minute later, Alec Robertson took a pass from Taylor Linton outside the box and shot a low, curving ball that went right in the corner to make it 2-0. Sean Hennessey almost got a goal when he took a pass from Peter Mataya, shot it off the post and then got the rebound in the air and hit it over the crossbar, but Prasanna would tally his second goal of the game thanks to a shot off the post by Hennessey. The rebound was put into the corner, similar to Robertson’s goal, and it made it 3-0.

Hernandez would get injured somewhere in the scrum over the loose ball after Justin Crichlow took a shot that bounced off the keeper. Hernandez left the game and Erik Schunke took over.

The Mavs added to their lead, with Mataya taking a rising shot that hit off the crossbar and went to E.J. Bushnell, who tapped it over Schunke’s head to make it 4-0, where the score remained at halftime.

In the second half, the Mavs would once again score in the second minute, as Tristan Springer got a breakaway off a deflection near the 40-yard line and slammed it into the corner, making it 5-0. The Hawks’ main forward, senior Mesfin Gebremeski, rolled his ankle in the 48th minute near the goal and had to leave, although he would return later. In the 56th minute the Mavs made it 6-0 as Linton had a shot eerily similar to Robertson’s goal, taking a deflection off a defender and then smashing the ball into the corner.

The final goal of the game was scored by Bushnell, as he took a pass from Nechirvan Zebari and chipped his shot over the keeper, making it 7-0 for a convincing Senior Night win.

The senior players for the Mavericks are Matt Carver, Sean Hennessey, EJ Bushnell, Enrique Zambrano and Nechirvan Zebari.
