My Edmonds Food: Seafood and wine event at Arista, EdCC garden classes

By Lara Alexander

Seafood and wine pairing event with local author

On July 12, Arista Wine Cellars and the Edmonds Bookshop will be hosting a delicious evening with Chef Becky Selengut at 6:30 p.m. at Arista, 320 Fifth Ave. S. You may recognize Chef Becky’s name from this column two weeks ago, as the author of the cookbook that local Edmonds “foodie” Karen Rosenzweig is using for her cooking project. Rosenzweig is spending her summer cooking every one of the 75 recipes in Chef Becky Selengut’s seafood cookbook. As of last count, Rosenzweig was a third of the way through with 27 recipes complete.

Chef Becky is no stranger to Edmonds. She regularly teaches cooking classes at the Edmonds PCC, which is how she met both the Arista family and the owner of the Edmonds Bookshop. Chef Becky looks forward to demonstrating recipes from her new cookbook: “Good Fish – Sustainable Seafood Recipes from the Pacific Coast” at the Arista event July 12. “It feels incredible,” says Chef Becky about writing her first book, “I birthed a book baby from my fingertips and she’s pretty cute.” She is already working on a second book, a collection of humorous personal food stories.

On the menu at the Arista event is a coconut and cucumber soup with Dungeness crab salad and other treats, all served with the wine pairings featured in the book. Cost is $25 per person and includes a $10 coupon good toward a book purchase or wine purchase. Call 425-771-7009 to reserve seat.

Arista Wine Cellars is also hosting a Bastille Day celebration on July 16, with a French cheese and wine tasting. Expect to sip wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, & the Rhone Valley from French Importer Cavatappi Distributors. The Resident Cheesemonger will be bringing some great french cheeses from his local cheese shop.

Fall edibles in the garden

The weather this spring was not very motivational for gardeners, but it is not too late to grow your own food this year. “You can still transplant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squash into the garden if you do it very soon,” says Gayle Larson, horticulture teacher at Edmonds Community College and owner of Dancing Raven Design, and edible garden consultation and design business. She says that now is a great time for planting seeds that you can harvest in the fall, such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, beets and carrots, adding that any of the plants in the cabbage family taste sweetest after a frost.

If you would like to learn more from Larson about growing vegetables in your garden, there is still space for people to register for her Summer Vegetable Gardening class at Edmonds Community College if you do so by July 14. The focus of this hands-on class will be on fall and winter gardening and students do not have to have gardening experience to join, promises Larson.

Scholarship for Edmonds horticulture students

The Mukilteo Way Garden Club is offering a $500 scholarship in the horticulture field to be used for academic classes at Edmonds Community College. The scholarship is offered to anyone working in the horticulture field or those interested in beginning a new path in horticulture, including graduating high school seniors. The funds are raised from The Mukilteo Garden and Quilt Tour and other garden club activities. Their tour this year, showcasing 100 handmade quilts on display in eight premier gardens, is on Saturday, July 16.
