Edmonds’ Louis Braille School closes; cites lack of funding

My Edmonds News readers have been asking about the apparent closure of the Louis Braille School on Edmonds Way, which is now vacant with a “For Sale” sign posted. We received this note from the school’s founder/director Carolyn Meyer, who confirmed the news:

We closed the school at the end of June because of lack of funding. We would love to reopen but would require substantial long-term financial support and a suitable building.

For five wonderful years, students attending our school received a comprehensive, holistic education that included daily living skills and social skills as well as traditional academic courses, all taught in ways understandable and accessible to each child’s unique challenges.

We thank the community for its interest and concern. Frequent trips to Edmonds stores and points of interest were a unique part of our curriculum and eagerly anticipated by our students. Thank you for your kindness. It’s been an honor.

I am continuing my dedication to braille literacy and accessibility by expanding my braille transcription services, building on 20 years of transcribing experience.

  1. It is very sad to see this closure. The students seemed so happy at the Louis Braille School and we had them at Rosewood Courte on many occasions to mix with our residents and our Day Care folks. Together they sang and drew pictures enjoying each other’s company. My hats off to Carolyn for her dedication and willingness to provide this service to our special children and families during the past five years.

  2. It’s too bad. Oregon lost the school for the blind a few years ago. It appears to be getting hard for anyone with disabilities of any sort to get help.
