Kicking off its 11th year under the direction of Frank DeMiero, the Sno-King Community Chorale will hold its annual three-evening “Get Acquainted” and “Welcome Back” Boot Camp Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 23-25. The boot camp begins at 7 p.m. each evening at Edmonds Community College, Mill Creek Hall, Room 109.
“I prefer to call them ‘Arias in August,’” DeMiero said. “But, my chorale says ‘Boot Camp’ is more like it! Basically, it’s an opportunity for our 100-voice group to reconvene after a brief summer off, share their recent experiences, get an introduction to next season’s music, and invite anyone they know to try us out before weekly rehearsals begin in September.”
As the chorale has gained in local, regional and national recognition, invitations to perform have increased year by year. Highlights of recent years have been a performance with the visiting Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra; an invitation by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins to perform the national première of his new work Gloria at New York’s Carnegie Hall last January (and subsequently its West Coast première in March); commissioned works by the legendary Anita Kerr and renowned composer John Rutter; and hosting guests artists such as The Brothers Four, pianist Walt Wagner, jazz and gospel artists Dee Daniels and Louise Rose, and Northwest favorite Stan Boreson. Besides the New York trip, members of the chorale enjoyed a five-city performance in Italy five years ago and are in the initial planning stages of another European tour.
Anyone interested is invited to come to the boot camp; Sno-King Community Chorale is a non-audition group. For more information, call 206-473-9416 or 425-771-0824.
