The Lady Maverick soccer team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to the third-ranked Everett Seagulls Tuesday night. The lone goal of the match came when Haley Ayers deflected a cross in that got by Maverick goalkeeper Ashley Routh for the goal, which was scored in around the 20th minute. The game was tight in terms of ball possession and chances, but neither side could break through after Ayers put scored. Everett’s Katie Johnson made several great saves, including a deflected ball that almost went over her head before she snared the ball.
Action climaxed in the 80th and final minute. After a corner kick from Seagulls’ Cherise Shaver was cleared, the Mavericks got the ball back down field and had a free kick near the 40-yard line. The kick connected with Emily Crichlow at the corner of the penalty box, but Johnson saved her low shot as time expired.
The Mavs’ next game is Thursday at Shorecrest, at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks (6-3-0) are fourth in the division while Everett is 8-0-1 and in first place.
