The Lady Mavs got a huge bounce-back win Tuesday night after the loss at Lynnwood last week. Margreet Barhoum put up 23 points (19 in the first half) to lead all scorers and guide Meadowdale to a 66-24 victory over the Oak Harbor Wildcats.
Most of Barhoum’s points came about thanks to the Mavs forcing turnovers to earn breakaways for easy buckets. Tatiana Cumming and Kelsey Rankin both had four points to lead Wildcat scorers.
The game started slowly. It took a few minutes before the Mavs started to score, and score they did. They went on a 12-0 run through the first 7 minutes, which featured scores such as Barhoum dropping an amazing pass to Mackenzie Bretz at the side of the basket for two. The main force during the run, though, was Julianne Kossian, as she hit back to back threes to make it 10-0. The Mavs’ double-team defense inflicted panic in the Wildcats, as they weren’t able to score anything until Marissa Lewis hit a three to make it just 12-3 with 37 seconds left in the quarter. Meadowdale led 16-3 after one.
The Mavs hit their stride in the second, forcing 14 turnovers (three of which were five-second violations) and scoring 21 points, with Barhoum leading the way. Kossian stole a cross-court pass, and pushed it to Barhoum for an easy two, making it 18-5. Right after, Barhoum did it herself, stealing an inbounds pass and taking it for a lay-in and 20-7 lead. The Mavs built up a 29-9 lead with 3:10 left in the quarter; with their up-tempo pace forcing turnovers and getting fast points. Alyssa Reuble also contributed when she got a mid-court steal and took it the other way to make it 32-10. Meadowdale had a 37-12 lead at the half.
The third quarter started with more of the same for the Mavs. Alisa Sagdahl took away another pass, and hit a streaking Barhoum for two points. The Mavs forced nineturnovers in the quarter, as they continued to double-team the Wildcats. Reuble made a great play with 3:00 to go in the quarter, when she got a breakaway and passed between the Wildcat defense coming back to Sara Fjortoft for an easy bucket. A few minutes later, Reuble once again got a steal at mid-court, but this time she did it herself for another two points to make it 52-20. Fjortoft excited the crowd when she hit a half-court three with time expiring in the quarter to put the Mavs up 56-22.
In the fourth quarter, the Mavs put in their developing players to get them some experience. It was five minutes before either team scored, as Kossian hit a three to put Meadowdale up 59-22. The Mavericks easily closed out the game with a 66-24 victory.
Meadowdale improves to 2-4 (2-3 in conference), and the next game is Thursday at Shorecrest, at 7:15 p.m.
