Edmonds police report 41-percent dip in home burglaries since late 2011

Thanks to increased enforcement and investigation, Edmonds police  on Tuesday reported a 41-percent decrease in residential burglaries from late 2011 — when a large spike in home burglaries was reported — to February 2012

According to police spokesman Sgt. Mike Blackburn, in the past two months Edmonds police have arrested several individuals for burglary, “including some who were captured as they prepared to commit the act.” In addition, Blackburn said, police have made “dozens of contacts of suspicious individuals and vehicles found in our neighborhoods,” often a result of citizens calling 911 to report suspicious activity.

“The Edmonds Police Department has partnered with other law enforcement agencies throughout the region to coordinate efforts against active and suspected burglars,” Blackburn said. “Arrests in both Snohomish and King Counties have had an immediate impact on the number of burglaries in our community.”

Police encourage residents to remain vigilant. “Burglary suspects have been known to drive around neighborhoods with easy access to main roads while they choose a residence that appears unoccupied,”Blackburn said. “The suspect will typically knock at the front door before going around to a side or back door or window to gain entry. Alert citizens have an opportunity to help police identify a burglar during this phase by calling 911 to report the suspicious activity.”

  1. Well done, Edmonds Police!!!! Thank you for not only the “dip” in home burglaries, but for all that you do. Great work.

  2. Way to go to everyone who has been vigilant and keeping their eyes open for these scumbags! And thanks to the EPD for stepping up patrols. This burglary situation was brought to our attention because of the increase of patrol cars I saw going through our neighborhood. I have grown up in this house and we VERY RARELY have any police activity. It was nice to see them cruise through! I hope this will make the burglars think twice about hitting any homes in this area!
