Keeping downtown businesses open for Valentine’s Day shopping and dining was top of mind for City of Edmonds Public Works Director Phil Williams as his crew repaired a water main leak near the fountain at 5th Avenue and Main Street Tuesday. Work required intersection closures and traffic rerouting as workers had to excavate three separate areas before finding a circular crack in an old 12-inch cast iron water main.
“It was very difficult to throttle enough valves in the area to reduce flows sufficiently at the leak location that we could get a repair band on it and yet keep all of our downtown businesses in water service on Valentine’s Day at the same time,” Williams said. “But we did get it done and have placed a temporary asphalt patch on the areas we excavated.”
Workers will go back and repair the decorative concrete in the near future, “when we have somewhat higher ambient temperatures to work with,” Williams added.
“I was extremely proud of our crews that did this work,” he said. “They worked very quickly and efficiently but with their own and the public’s safety always in mind.” And he cited the Edmonds Police Department for their efforts to control traffic while the job was completed.
