This Friday night’s North Sound SeaWolves game will feature family fun both on and off the field. Not only will the Edmonds-based SeaWolves meet the Washington Crossfire in both teams’ quest for the Ruffneck Cup, (a competition for bragging rights among Puget Sound-area Premier Development League soccer teams), the Cascade Kombi Club will bring its vintage Volkswagens for a show outside Edmonds Stadium.

According to Stuart Zickefoose of Edmonds, who oversees the club, a Kombi (combee, as in combination) is another word for a Volkswagen bus. The club accepts as members “all VW and Porsche and Audi and BMW of any type, but 95 percent of us are aircooled (older than 1985) VWs,” Zickefoose said.

“The Kombis have been local for over 30 years, and have been putting on their vintage VW show yearly,” he said, giving these VW bus enthusiasts “a place to come and talk about their addictions to these amazing machines.”

So how did a vintage Volkswagen show end up at a SeaWolves game? Zickefoose relayed that a group of eight Bay Window VW bus owners (see accompanying photo) were parked at the Edmonds Dick’s Drive-In one day when SeaWolves general manager (and Edmonds resident) Jim Underhill happened by — and the show was arranged.

The SeaWolves game begins at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Edmonds District Stadium, located next to Edmonds-Woodway High School at 7600 212th St. S.W. Special summer ticket prices are in effect: Adults, (18 and older) $7, youth (11-17) $3 and children under 10 free. You can purchase tickets here.
