Mavs’ soccer crushes Grizzlies 5-0
The Lady Mavs on Tuesday looked like the team that was ranked top 10 in the preseason when they defeated the Glacier Peak Grizzlies 5-0. Emily Crichlow scored two first-half goals and Kendall Racker, Hannah Taylor and Alyssa Navlet all scored in the second half in a blowout victory. All three goals in the second half came within 10 minutes of each other, as Meadowdale pummeled goaltender Emille Pedersen. Ashley Routh was relatively untested throughout and easily shut out the Grizzly offense.
The Grizzlies tried to keep Crichlow and the other forwards offsides, and it worked at first. The first chance came six minutes in when Cassidy Schlicke-Perez hit a through ball to Taylor near the goal box. Taylor crossed it into the middle of the box but Pedersen came out to get the save. Back the other way, the kick from Pedersen eventually landed at the feet of Emme Davis, and she got past the defense and into the box. She hit a shot on net that went straight to Routh, however, and the game remained scoreless. In the eleventh minute, Taylor hit a through ball to Crichlow, and she got into the goal box. Pedersen challenged Crichlow and was able to save her shot after cutting down the angle.
The next minute, Crichlow was sprung again, but this time by Raecker. This time, she had a worse angle so Pedersen didn’t need to come out. Crichlow’s shot was straight at Pedersen and saved. The corner kick that happened after was taken by Navlet, but was caught by the goalkeeper. Finally, the Mavs broke through in the 20th minute. Another through ball to Crichlow was the key to the goal. Kayla Pruitt was the one to send it up. Crichlow got it just outside the box, fought off a defender that was holding her, got into the box, dribbled around the goalie, and easily finished the play to make it 1-0 Mavs.
In the 38th minute, Navlet got a chance to hit a bouncing ball from 18 yards out and she took it. The shot was a line drive that doinked off the post and out, keeping the score 1-0. Until the 40th minute. Taylor Monroe-Jones hit, guess what, a through ball to Crichlow, she took one dribble, and then hit a shot past the left arm of Pedersen to make it 2-0 just before the half ended. The score remained the same going into the second.
The Mavs picked up right where they left off in the 50th minute. Navlet got the ball down the sidelines about 30 yards from goal and noticed the entire Grizzly defense dropped back to cover Crichlow and the other players making a run. Instead of passing it up to Crichlow like she normally would, Navlet managed to thread a cross through to Raecker, who timed her run a little after the front line. Raecker settled the ball down and struck it into the far corner of the goal to make it 3-0 Mavs. A minute later, the Mavs got a corner kick, and Navlet sent a cross in that was caught by the goalie.
In the 57th minute, Crichlow got the ball down the sidelines and sent a lone cross near the top of the goal box. Navlet tried to settle it but it bounced straight to Taylor. Taylor controlled the ball and hit a shot 18 yards out that went over Pedersen’s head and off the crossbar and in to make it 4-0 Mavericks. Three minutes later, the Mavs scored again. Navlet did a short give and go with Kearstin Franco that ended with Navlet having the ball at the top of the box. She made one move around a defender and then hit a curving strike that fooled Pedersen and went in. The score was 5-0 at that point, and the Mavericks were able to close out the rest of the match without incident, giving them a huge win.
With the win, the Mavs improve to 5-1 (2-1 in conference) on the year and play again on Thursday at Shorecrest at 7:30 p.m. Glacier Peak falls to 1-3-1 (0-2 in conference) on the year and play Shorewood at home on Thursday, also at 7:30 p.m.
