Meadowdale HS student died of cardiac arrest
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office has determined the cause of death of a Meadowdale High School student.
Matthew S. Truax, 16, died Friday, Sept. 13, of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an official said on Monday. Truax, of Edmonds, was a junior.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a common disease that affects about one out of every 500 people, according to the American Heart Association. It is a common cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people, including athletes.
In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. The thickened heart muscle can make it difficult for the heart to pump blood.
Truax was in a third period physical education class when he collapsed. School staff and paramedics responded but were unable to revive him. He was taken to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital.
