Third annual Dick’s ‘Walkathon’ gets underway with a Deluxe and fries at the Edmonds location
The morning fog had yet to lift when a group of friends met up at the Edmonds Dick’s Drive-In to begin a 22-mile walk that will take them to all six Dick’s locations. This is the third year for the Dick’s Walkathon, and the second one that has started at the Edmonds location.
Begun by Ballard High School chums Lars Phillips and JP Osseward, the walk will take them from Edmonds to the Seattle neighborhoods of Lake City, Holman Road, Wallingford, Capitol Hill and the last stop — Queen Anne.
“We left a large Volvo at Queen Anne last night,” Phillips said. “We’re starting out with six walkers this morning, and expect to pick up a few more along the way, so we chose the biggest vehicle we could get our hands on for the return trip.”
The Dick’s Walkathon grew out of the founders’ love of hiking. “We were looking for cool things to do, and we didn’t have a lot of money so we settled on urban hiking.” Osseward said. “We started out walking the city limits from north to south, and were amazed at how enjoyable it was. You’re out in the air, talk to people along the way, see and experience so much more than when you drive.”
Added Phillips: “Dick’s food fit our budget, and one day the idea came to us to put together a walk that would visit all Dick’s locations. Dick’s is a genuine Seattle institution, and we’re genuine Seattle natives, born and bred. So the Dick’s Walkathon is a natural.”
Phillips and Osseward are hoping to expand the event in future years. “It would be great to partner with a charity and raise money for a good cause,” Phillips said.
The number of walkers has grown from the original two friends, and even attracted some out-of-town participants.
Kevin Drake recently moved to Seattle from the Portland area, and hadn’t even heard of Dick’s until meeting up with Phillips and Osseward. “The walk sounded like fun, so I figured why not,” he said. Drake had yet to even taste Dick’s food, so to fuel up for the walk he bit into his first-ever Deluxe. “Delicious!” he exclaimed.
Clad in home-made T-shirts emblazoned with “1 day, 6 Dicks, 22 miles,” and wearing sturdy walking shoes, the intrepid group set off in the morning fog from the Edmonds Dick’s, Highway 99 and 220th Street, at 10:45 am.
Next stop: Lake City, ETA 1:15 pm.
