Edmonds man involved in Sunday’s Highway 2 crash identified

The Washington State Patrol Wednesday identified the 86-year-old Edmonds man injured during a head-on crash with another car on Highway 2 Sunday as Edward L. McKnight.

McKnight was driving his 2001 Dodge Ram pickup westbound on Highway 2 when he was struck by a 1992 Chevrolet pickup driven by 55-year-old Eric J. Breum of Skykomish. Breum, who was being pursued by Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident began when Snohomish County deputies stopped a vehicle after a driver was suspected of driving under the influence. At some point during the contact, the driver drove away from deputies at a high rate of speed eastbound on Highway 2. Deputies pursued the vehicle, and around mile post 34 the suspect collided head-on with a westbound vehicle. The deputies, pursing in two different vehicles, then collided with the suspect vehicle. Two deputies sustained injuries during the incident.

McKnight had to be extracted from the vehicle and was transported to Valley General Hospital for what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The two deputies, who have since been released from the hospital, are veterans of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. They have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
