The EWHS wrestling team begins its quest this week for a fourth consecutive Wesco 4A South Title. Coach Brian Alfi returns for his third year as head of the program, having moved up in 2011 after five years as an assistant. Last year’s team sported a dual-match record of 9-3 and sent nine wrestlers to Districts, with several of those moving on to the State meet, where the team finished 9th overall.

Coach Alfi is encouraged by the depth of this year’s squad. He mentions Cascade and Kamiak as being the strongest threats in the Wesco South, with perennial power Lake Stevens remaining the clear favorite to take the overall Wesco title.

There are 55 wrestlers in the program, “an enthusiastic group”, says Alfi. Here’s a list of the top returners and how they finished last year:

Nathan Vulliet- 5th in State (Sr)

Gabe Baltazar- 6th in Regions (Jr)

Hiram Martin- 6th in Regions (Jr)

Spencer Schultz- 6th in Regions (Soph)

Breakout wrestlers, according to Alfi: Jackson Fair, Jasen Turnquist and Nathan Nash.

The season consists of a combination of “dual meets,” and multi-team “invitationals. The Dec. 14 EWHS invite is, according to Alfi, “always exciting. We have over 20 teams coming, and we won it last year.” Here’s the rest of the schedule:
