Snohomish County Democrats on Saturday selected 21st District Rep. Marko Liias as the sole choice for appointment to the State Senate seat vacated following the resignation of Paull Shin.
“This is a bittersweet moment for me, as I take on the responsibility of filling Paull Shin’s seat in the State Senate,” Liias said. “I am honored to have the support of our grassroots Democrats, and I look forward to getting to work on the issues that matter to our community.”
The Washington State Constitution requires the Democratic Party to submit a list of three nominees to the Snohomish County Council for appointment. Because Liias was the sole candidate to seek the position, local Democrats nominated two placeholder nominees to meet the constitutional requirement.
Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson and Edmonds City Councilmember Strom Peterson agreed to be nominated, although both support Liias and told local Democrats that they would not accept appointment to the State Senate.
“I want to be clear, I will not accept an appointment to the State Senate by the County Council. I was recently sworn in as the new mayor of Mukilteo, and I am committed to our city and the work ahead,” said Gregerson.
“I support Marko 100 percent, and while it’s an honor to be nominated, I would not accept the position,” said Peterson.
The Snohomish County Council will interview the three nominees and make an appointment on Jan. 21.
