In a battle of two Wesco South wrestling powerhouses, Edmonds-Wooway came from behind to hand Lynnwood its first loss of the season 40-29 Tuesday at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
The Warriors opened the meet with a 19-4 technical fall win by Nathan Vulliet over Lynnwood’s Cody Stocker at 152 pounds; then the Royals won five out of the next six matches, stretching their lead to 29-9.
When sophomore grappler Ebrima Fatty took the mat at 106, the Warriors were in a deep hole, but Fatty dominated Oscar Trombertt 11-3 starting a streak of seven straight wins to close out the meet. It was Senior Night in the Warrior Wrestling Pit, but it was wins by four sophomores and a junior that contributed to that streak of victories.
Four Warrior seniors took the mat for the final time in front of a home crowd and three of them; Vulliet (152), Jackson Fair (132), and Hiram Martin (145) were victorious. Fair won his match 9-2 over Nate Paulson, putting the Warriors in the lead to stay, 31-29.
The final match of the night between Martin and Matt Calkins proved to be the most exciting. Martin jumped out to an early lead and was up 8-2 going into the final two minutes, but Calkins came back before losing 10-8 in the closing seconds of the match.
With schools wrestling their final dual meets of the regular season on Thursday, the Warriors and Royals are in a three-way tie for first with Kamiak. Edmonds-Woodway will close out their season on the road against Kamiak; Lynnwood will be at home against Cascade. A win on the road will give the Warriors their fourth straight league title.
