With the Wesco South title on the line in Thursday night’s dual meet between Edmonds-Woodway and Kamiak, the Warriors were not able to hang on to an early lead and were defeated by the Knights, 37-28.
The grapplers for both schools showed the fans why these two teams came into the evening tied atop the league, with many of the matches staying close until the final buzzer, including two overtime bouts and one decided in the final seconds.
At 132 lbs, Jackson Fair faced off against Kamiak’s Nathan Goodwin. After a 0-0 tie at the end of round one, Goodwin took a 2-1 lead in the second. In the third round Fair continued to come back and tied the score at 5 late in the match. Fair cut Goodwin loose with 22 seconds left, and Goodwin managed to avoid being taken in the closing seconds, winning 6-5.
At 138 lbs, Jonah Cortezzo from Edmonds-Woodway and Alex Maxey from Kamiak battled to a 0-0 tie through regulation and the first overtime period. Maxey held on to win 4-2 after all three overtime periods.
The 195 lb match up between Warrior Spencer Schultz and Kamiak’s Colton Braa was knotted 1-1 after regulation. This time the OT would go the Warriors way when Schultz scored a take down in sudden victory overtime to win 3-1.
Edmonds-Woodway will finish the dual meet season 3-2 league and 5-3 overall, in second place behind Kamiak.
The 4A Wesco District Tournament is Feb. 7-8 at Snohomish High School.
