When Edmonds-Woodway wrestler Nathan Vulliet finished 5th in state as a junior, he set his sights on reaching the state finals and becoming a champion. He knew he needed to work harder and get stronger than his opponents.

Vulliet advanced to the 145 lbs. semifinals of the 4A Mat Classic XXVI Saturday, where he defeated Wyatt Nemec of Mead to earn a place in the 145 final, But when Vulliet stepped on the mat to wrestle the final match of his high school career, the victory was not meant to be.

Vulliet’s opponent in the championship would be defending state champion Colton Orrino from Central Valley of Spokane. Orrino, who came into the match undefeated, scored in all three round before defeating Vulliet 6-0.

Vulliet closed out his season with a record of 35-6.
