Peter Mountford, winner of the Washington State Book Award for ‘A Young Man’s Guide to Late Capitalism,’ speaks at EPIC Group Writers this Monday at 11 a.m. in the Edmonds Library. The event is free although seating is limited to the first 20 people.
Mountford said his talk will be on ‘The Wisdom of Ambivalence’ and the “value of complexity in storytelling – complex characters, plots, sentences, moral conditions, etc. A book must resist simple or easy answers. As Milan Kundera wrote: ‘The stupidity of people comes from having an answer for everything, and the wisdom of the novel comes from having a question for everything.’”
Mountford’s new novel, ‘The Dismal Science,’ has received enthusiastic reviews in Seattle Times, The Stranger, Seattle Weekly, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Publisher’s Weekly, and elsewhere. His short essays and fiction have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Granta, Boston Review, Best New American Voices 2008, Salon, Slate, and the New York Times Magazine.
