haitipic1Proving that beauty is more than skin deep, Edmonds-based Pur Skin Clinic founder Denice Schwind, PA-C, traveled to Haiti in February for the inauguration of a community well that was funded through $10,000 in patient and community donations.

The well, in the Haitian town of Potoseyal, will supply nearly 300 people with access to clean water. After arriving in Haiti in mid-February, Schwind attended a three-hour well inauguration celebration that included Haitian government officials, non-profit organization Haiti Outreach and the newly appointed Potoseyal water committee, which will manage the clean water for a more healthy community. During the visit, Schwind was also able to visit a local Haitian orphanage and a school. Those visits were sponsored by Haiti Outreach, which works with communities in Haiti on water, education and other community-initiated projects.

haitipic5A cosmetic dermatology specialist, Schwind has been involved with clean water projects over the past two years, sparked by a volunteer trip in 2011 to treat children with water-borne illness in Machu Picchu, Peru.

Schwind notes that more than 4,500 children die every day due to lack of clean water, and that 1 billion people lack access to clean water worldwide. Water sanitation projects are one of the most effective ways of saving lives and most cost-effective investments in disease prevention, she said.

Schwind said that Pur Skin Clinic plans to continue supporting various local and international philanthropic causes, including fundraising for another well in Haiti in 2015. For more information, visit Pur Skin Clinic’s website .
