Boys soccer: Mavericks blow out Chargers 5-1
The Meadowdale Mavericks have a three-game win streak after Wednesday’s 5-1 win over the Marysville-Getchell Chargers. Five different Mavericks scored goals in the victory, including defenders Griffin Over and Alec Norton. Mark Steinke’s shutout streak was finally broken after 256 minutes when Devon Green put a low shot past him in the 76th minute for Getchell’s lone goal of the game. Stuart Smith had a goal and three assists on the night.
The Chargers had good possession for the first minute, and it turned into a chance. Robert Cordon caught up to a through ball and sent in a low cross that the Maverick defense cleared. After that, the first half was all Mavericks. In the 4th minute, Taylor Von der Hofen dropped a pass to Smith, and he took a 30 yard shot that Conor Beegle saved. Four minutes later, Jonathan Flores sent a low cross that skipped through the six-yard box and cleared. Smith took a corner kick in the 9th minute that got back to him. His second attempt at a cross was cleared. But the pressure continued. Colton Davis won the fight against five Chargers for the ball in the box and got off a weak shot that Beegle made the save on. A minute later, Smith tried another long shot that Beegle knocked down and Austin Panek got to the rebound first. Panek tried to put the ball home but Beegle made the second save.
Finally, the Mavericks broke through in the 16th minute. Smith sent a pass across to Over, and he used the acres of space given to dribble up 30 yards from goal before sending a floater that went over Beegle’s head and just inside the top right corner of the net. That was the only goal the Mavs scored in the first half, but they tried to add to it. A minute later, they were back in the Chargers’ box. Panek sent a cross through the box and over Beegle that got to Von der Hofen. He tried a shot that was cleared off the goal line by Roger Devora. The Chargers earned a corner kick in the 19th minute, but Green’s cross was easily cleared. In the 28th minute, the Mavs earned a free kick from 20 yards out. Smith took a shot that skimmed off the crossbar and over the net. Then in the 32nd minute, Smith had a free kick around the same distance out, but to the side of the net, so he sent a short pass to Taylor Linton. Linton then sent a shot that went over the net. The last chance of the half went to the Chargers, surprisingly enough. Green sent in a low cross that bounced around in the MHS box and went to Elias Angulo. Angulo got a shot off that went wide of the net, and the game went into halftime with the score 1-0 Meadowdale.
It didn’t take long for the Mavs to strike in the second half. In the 44th minute, Davis stole the ball from a defender in the box and got off a shot that was deflected out of bounds. That set up a corner kick from Smith that Norton easily headed in to put Meadowdale up 2-0. In the 47th minute, Smith took a 30 yard free kick that Beegle had to make a save on. Then four minutes later, Tristan Springer attempted a 40 yard shot that just went over the crossbar. Finally, Meadowdale notched a third goal in the 57th minute. Chad Triplett got the ball near the sidelines and dribbled into the wide open space the Chargers defense gave him. He then floated a shot-pass that curled over Beegle’s head and into the top corner of the net. It was an exact replica of the Over goal, and the Mavs were up 3-0.
In the 61st minute, Over tried to score his second of the night from the same exact spot, but the ball bounced off the crossbar. Panek was right there to tap in the rebound, but he knocked it over the net and out of play. Four minutes later, Green had another chance when he got open at the top of the goal box, but he shot high. In the 65th minute, Linton took a throw-in and launched the ball into the box. The ball bounced through and to Smith, and he calmly tapped it home to make it 4-0. The Chargers got one back in the 76th minute. Robert Cordon sent a through ball to Green and he dribbled around a couple of defenders and into the goal box, where he sent a low shot past Stienke to cut the lead to 4-1. In the 78th minute, the Mavs restored the four goal lead when Smith took another corner kick. This time, it was Panek who headed the ball home, making up for his previous miss from point-blank range. That gave the Mavericks a 5-1 lead and that was the score at the end of the game.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 4-3-1 (3-2 in conference) and play again on Tuesday at Everett at 7:30 p.m. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 2-6 (1-4 in conference) and play again on Tuesday at Shorewood at 7:30 p.m.
