K9 Kira of the Edmonds Police Department will be receiving bullet- and stab-protective vests thanks to the efforts of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization, and The Petco Foundation.

Kira is the second Edmonds poilice dog to get a vest. K9 Hobbs of the Edmonds Police Department received a vest earlier this year.

The nonprofit Vested Interest, which provides protective vests for law enforcement dogs nationwide, was the beneficiary of the Petco Foundation’s “Helping Heroes” campaign that raised $10,687. A total of 14 dogs across the U.S. will receive a vest, which costs $950 and has a five-year warranty.

Kira’s vest will arrive in six to eight weeks, said Edmonds police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marsh.
