Scene in Edmonds: Unusual roost for a goose

Dan Thulin relates that he and wife were on the Edmonds ferry Wednesday when they saw this unusual sight. "As you know, the Canadian geese are very big birds, they take a lot room to land," Thulin said. "They are not known for their vertical landing. I cannot figure how this big bird landed on this little pier piling."

  1. It is not unusual to see Canada Geese on ferry dolphins and other such marine structures. When taking flight, this goose is known to rise quickly and directly from land and water. It occasionally takes a step or two before rising in flight, but that is not a prerequisite to flight. Landing on a ferry dolphin is well within the capability of this species. Still, it is always fun to see. Thanks for sharing the photo.
