Meadowdale’s third straight appearance at the 3A State Softball Tournament surprisingly was its shortest.
The Mavericks dropped both their games Friday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. Meadowdale lost 4-0 to University Prep in a first-round game and then fell 10-5 to Holy Names in a loser-out contest. The Mavericks, the Wesco South champions, finished 19-5 overall.
Meadowdale mustered only three hits against University’s Alex Douglas. University scored runs in the first and second inning and then a two-run home run in the fifth sealed the victory.
The Mavericks again found themselves down early after Holy Names scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Meadowdale answered back with two runs in the second but the Cougars scored a run in the second, five in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Meadowdale ended up outhitting Holy Names 12 to 11 but lost the game in the field with eight errors.
The Mavericks took third at state last year and won its first round game two years ago. A fourth trip to state appears more than plausible since Meadowdale graduates only two players in Ashley Brooke and Tiffany DeWayne and brings back both of its pitchers – sophomores Julie Reuble and Samantha Gregoryk. This was the first season both saw significant action pitching at the varsity level.
