The Aurora Village Marketplace Safeway Store on Highway 99 was evacuated Saturday afternoon after the store manager spotted what appeared to be a suspicious bag on the store shelf, Edmonds police said. A bomb squad was sent to the scene to investigate, but technicians determined the bag was not an explosive device.
According to Edmonds police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marsh, just before 3 p.m. Saturday the manager of the Safeway, located at 23632 Hwy 99, noticed a suspicious man “acting odd while walking through the store.” The man suddenly left, hurrying out the door without purchasing anything, Marsh said.
The manager reviewed security tape footage and discovered that the man had hidden a bag behind items on a shelf. “Acting on the side of caution,” Marsh said, the manager decided to evacuate the store and called 9-1-1. Edmoonds police helped with the evacuation and also contacted the bomb squad, which sent two technicians to the scene to further evaluate the bag and its contents.
The technicians discovered that the bag contained items that the suspect was attempting to steal from the store, and “for some unknown reason” decided to hide the bag on the shelf.
The suspect is described as a white male who was wearing a blue or green hat.
