Coming Saturday: It’s Summer Market time again in Edmonds

Edmonds-Historical-Museum_Summer-Market_Logo-TanPut on your sun hat, grab your canvas grocery bag, wear comfortable shoes and head to downtown Edmonds this Saturday for the opening of one of the area’s premier markets and a local tradition, the Edmonds Museum Summer Market.

Once again, the market will take over 5th Avenue North from Main Street to Bell Street, and east up Bell Street around Centennial Plaza, closing those streets to traffic. Vendors will line the streets, offering everything from fresh locally-grown produce to handmade jewelry to freshly-prepared pizza, crepes, bread and other treats.

Sponsored by the museum, the Summer Market draws people from all over the region, with attendance increasing each year.

“The Summer Market is our premier event of the year, and a major fundraiser for the museum,” said Margaret Wilcox, Museum Summer Market Chair. “It’s all staffed by volunteers, there’s lots to do, and it’s great fun. If you’re looking for a fun, rewarding experience and have a few hours to spare, we’d love to have you join us.” Call the Edmonds Historical Museum at 425-774-0900 for more information.

New this year, many of the Edmonds Summer Market vendors are accepting WIC and Senior Vouchers. Look for the yellow and white signs on your favorite farm stands. If you don’t see the sign, ask the vendor.

Making a repeat appearance is the market’s no-pets policy. The policy was implemented in the middle of the 2012 market season as a safety measure. The Edmonds market draws more people each year, and the limited space means that at busy times the crowds get quite dense, creating an uncomfortable, stressful and unsafe situation for pets. Service animals are allowed.

“We will be posting signs informing market-goers about the no-dogs rule, and talking to people who show up with dogs by mistake,” said Wilcox. “We want to help pet owners understand the policy and why it was implemented.”

The 2014 Edmonds Summer Market operates Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., June 28 through Oct. 4, the only exception being Aug. 9 to make way for the Taste of Edmonds event. Learn more about the museum’s Summer Market at www.historicedmonds.org or on Facebook at edmondsmuseumsummermarket. The Edmonds Historical Museum is open on market Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  1. A suggestion: Volunteers could dog-sit outside the market area for a fundraising donation. The dogs will be happy, shoppers will be happy, vendors will be happy, and coffers will have more jingle. They could have water, more space, lots of petting, etc.
