Jimmy Shane won the first two heats in his pursuit of the Gold Cup Saturday, and each of his heats were excellent battles. In the first one, he raced with J Michael Kelly in the Graham Trucking neck-in-neck for two-thirds of the heat before pulling away. In the second, he had a similar contest with Jon Zimmerman, in the Spirit of Qatar, until it flew up and did a 360-degree spin before crashing.

Fortunately, Zimmerman seems to have emerged unharmed. The boat is under examination to determine how badly it has been damaged. Based upon first-glance pictures, it still may be able to race again tomorrow.

Kelly won one of the other preliminary heats as did Brian Perkins in the Al Deeby Dodge, which runs as the Snoqualmie Casino when in the Northwest.
