Dance teacher from Edmonds on quest for Miss Washington USA title
A 25-year-old dance instructor and college student from Edmonds is in the running for the title of Miss Washington USA.
Melanie Herring, who has been involved in dance since age 3, is representing Edmonds after recently moving to the area. A business major at Northwest College in Kirkland, Herring said she was saw competing in the pageant as a way to refine her public speaking skills — something she doesn’t get to do as a dancer.
Herring teaches at the Westlake Dance Center in Seattle and The Connection Performing Arts Studio in Mukilteo, but said she has also spent time in Uganda, using dance as therapy for child soldiers who had been forced into service by the now-exiled Joseph Kony — “people who have gone through abuse and tragic circumstances,” she said. She and the three other dancers who accompanied her there hope to form a non-profit to continue that work, she said.
The Miss Washington USA pageant is set for Oct. 18 and 19 in Burien, and will feature swimwear and evening gown competitions. The Miss Washington USA winner will go on to compete in the MISS USA Pageant, for the right to represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe Pageant.
