Meadowdale battled to the end but came up just short against Lake Stevens, falling 28-21 in a non-conference football season opener Friday at Lake Stevens High School.
Trailing 28-14 with just over two minutes left in the contest, the Mavericks scored quickly as Rory Spillum ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:09 remaining to cut the deficit to 7 points. But time ran out for the Mavericks, allowing the Vikings to come away with the victory.
The Mavericks scored first as Spillum’s 7-yard TD run in the first quarter gave Meadowdale a 7-0 lead. Lake Stevens tied the score as Jacob Eason tossed a 20-year TD to Josh Rasmussen with less than a minute left in the first quarter. The Vikings then took a 14-7 lead into halftime on a 23-yard scoring strike from Eason to Riley Krenz.
Meadowdale tied the score at 14 in the third quarter when quarterback JP Routen found Donovan Evans on a 37-yard touchdown. But Lake Stevens seized control of the game with back-to-back scores. Andrew Grimes scored on a 7-yard run later in the third quarter and Eason connected with Krenz on a 15-yard touchdown as the Vikings took a 28-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.
