Reminder: Money in Politics Forum coming to Edmonds Wednesday

Did you know that Washington state candidates and committees spent over $80 million on this year’s election? Are you concerned about the influence of money on our political system? Do you hope for a way to turn things around?

Come to a community forum on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Edmonds Senior Center from 7 to 9 p.m. to explore options for reversing the trend toward more prevalent and higher spending. The event, organized by the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County, is being co-sponsored by Fix Democracy Now, the Edmonds Senior Center and The Daily Herald.

Jim Street, of Fix Democracy Now, will explain how recent Supreme Court decisions have stifled campaign finance laws and affected the status of current efforts at the national level. Grant Degginger, chairman of the Public Disclosure Commission, will provide information about the commission’s work at the state level. State Senator Marko Liias will give us a perspective from a candidate’s point of view. Jon Bauer, Opinion Editor of The Herald, will be the moderator.

Questions and comments from the audience will complete the program. The Edmonds Senior Center is located at 220 Railroad Ave. on the Edmonds waterfront.
