New classes at Verdant: Nutrition, cooking, stress management, stroke prevention and e-cigarette education

verdant logoThe Verdant Health Commission is offering free community classes on healthy lifestyle topics in May. Additional classes also available at verdanthealth.org/events. All events are at the Verdant Community Wellness Center, 4710 196th St. S.W., Lynnwood.

Getting to Goal Lifestyle Program
May 5 from 10 a.m. -noon.
This group class, led by a registered dietitian, includes an overview of healthy habits with a focus on diet and physical activity. You’ll set long-term health goals based on guided self-evaluation and identify short-term steps that are achievable and measurable so you can sustain your new habits. You will also learn about free individual consultations with a registered dietitian that are available as part of the Getting to Goal program.

Healthy, Easy Weeknight Meals
May 5 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Spaghetti is a popular weeknight meal because it is easy, tasty, low-cost and familiar. And did you know that you can make tiny tweaks to your spaghetti recipe to make it healthier and delicious? In this class, you’ll have the opportunity to explore four different spaghetti recipes. Each recipe will become progressively healthier. You’ll help make these dishes so that you know exactly how it’s done.

E-Cigarettes and Vaping: Common Questions and Concerns
May 6 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
As a parent or professional, do you have questions about e-cigarettes and vaping? Are they really safer than regular cigarettes? Join Matt Munson, Wellness and Health Promotion Coordinator at Edmonds Community College and certified smoking cessation coach to explore the latest research, answer questions, and provide resources for quitting smoking.

Stress Management and Relaxation Training (SMART)
May 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Description: Attend this 2-hour interactive workshop led by Marni Port, MSW – a clinically trained facilitator in stress management who has taught SMART workshops at conferences, corporations, schools and organizations. Come learn healthy and effective techniques to decrease stress and reduce the negative effects of chronic stress on your health.

Healthy Brain, Healthy You
May 28 from 10-11 a.m.
Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability—yet, it is preventable, treatable and beatable! Learn the most common warning signs of stroke and how making small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in your brain health. You’ll also get hands-on tips and tidbits for “shaking the salt habit” as sodium sneaks into packaged and restaurant foods and becomes a major contributor to health problems.
