Edmonds resident Ken Peirce was recently awarded the Lynnwood Rotary Club’s Rotarian of the Year in recognition of his two years serving as chairman of the Rotary Club’s House Project. The project provides hands-on educational home-building experience for Edmonds School District high school students.

A retired surgeon, Peirce was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. He graduated from high school and attended the University of Michigan. He graduated from Albion College in 1965 with a bachelor of arts, cum laude, with a double major in chemistry. He received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1969 with his thesis in direct neurochemistry of the living brain. Accompanied by his wife, Nadine, and the first of their three children, Peirce completed his last three months of medical school in London at the Queen’s Square National Hospital for Nervous and Mental Disease, the “mecca” of neurology.

The family moved to Seattle in 1969 for internship at the University of Washington Hospitals, and there Ken completed his neurosurgery residency in 1975. He had already been invited to work at Group Health Cooperative with the City’s preeminent neurosurgeon and Peirce, then as Section Chief, built their seven-person department, where he worked until retirement in 2002.

Peirce was the Washington State Medical Society’s Neurosurgery Representative to the Department of Labor and Industries for 15 years.

In retirement he worked with his wife at their church’s Lynnwood Food Bank and in 2004 was asked to design, raise money and be the general contractor for their new food bank facility. He assisted in incorporating the food bank and wrote their articles and bylaws and many policies in the process. The new building was opened in 2006 debt free. He has worked in the new building as a board member, treasurer and repairman ever since.

During that same time, he discovered the Rotary Club of Lynnwood, joining the club in June 2004. This led to two other Lynnwood Rotarians helping him build and direct the food bank. He was soon asked to be on the Lynnwood Rotary Community Foundation Board in 2006 as secretary, a position he held until July 2013.

In 2006, Peirce also became the Lynnwood Rotary’s representative to the District 5030 Project, Rotary First Harvest, was voted to their executive board and with reorganization became a vice president of the new board of directors. He still serves on that board.

Peirce sits on the Lynnwood Rotary Club’s board as Vocational Service Director, with responsibility for chairing the committee managing the 40-year House Project.

A resident of Edmonds’ Lake Ballinger neighborhood, Peirce also has served on the board of the Lake Ballinger Community Association, working with the five municipalities on lake water quality and flooding. And he has spent two years on the board of directors of the World War II 398th Bomb Group Memorial Association.

  1. Ken earned this. He is focuses his many talents to help organizations effectively and efficiently help others.

    Congratulations

  2. Congrats Ken; haven’t spoken to you in years. However, last year I wanted you to know that I had a ‘seizure’ and wish you are still my doctor. Doing well; no problems! Jesus is good! Linda Carulli, former patient
