Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire on the deck of a second-floor apartment in the 1000 block of 5th Avenue South in downtown Edmonds around 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. There were no injuries.
According to Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes, the blaze was kept in check by a quick-thinking neighbor, who used a garden hose from the street level to shoot water onto the fire above.
As a result, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which caused smoke damage to the existing unit as well as the apartment above. The cause of the fire, which occurred when the apartment’s residents weren’t home, and a damage estimate are yet to be determined, Hynes said. The residents — a woman and her adult son — have renters’ insurance, Hynes said.
According Hynes, using a garden hose for fire control is acceptable as long as it can be done safely, “and only after someone has called 911,” she said.
