A couple of months ago, when thinking about the city’s upcoming 125th Anniversary celebration on Aug. 11, I remembered there are seven current and former Mayors among us. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to gather as many of them as possible to join in celebrating our anniversary?

For a quick history recall, we go back several decades to count all seven. They are: Harve Harrison, Larry Naughten, Laura Hall, Barb Fahey, Gary Haakenson, Mike Cooper and me. And, as someone who enjoys history, I wanted as many of them as possible to gather and be part of the coming celebration.

We have invited all six former mayors, and fortunately a majority — four of the six — will be able to join us. Larry Naughten, who lives in Las Vegas, will not be able join us, and Gary Haakenson will be in Europe, returning on Aug. 12!  All of the former mayors are extremely proud of the community and wish to participate. Including myself, there will be five former or current mayors on hand – an historic event in itself!

I will take the five of us to lunch and then the four former mayors will join me for the afternoon celebration in front of City Hall. I am so looking forward to lunch and hearing their perspective from the time they each were mayor, including a conversation of how the community has changed. We are a city rich in history and we need to learn from their knowledge.

Besides the above, we have numerous activities planned for the afternoon of the 11th. Of special note, we will have a delegation from our Sister City, Hekinan, Japan here to join us, including the Vice-Mayor and a traditional Japanese musical performance.

Also in the afternoon we will have special performances from local music and drama groups such as the Cascade Symphony Orchestra, Sno-King Community Chorale, Edmonds-Woodway Jazz Ensemble and the Phoenix Theatre… not to mention a special “appearance” by our first Mayor, George Brackett!

On top of the entertainment we will have a dedication of the new, gorgeous, Historical Museum Plaza and presentation of a Time Capsule. After cake and refreshments, at the end of the “official” festivities, we will have a street dance featuring the pop-rock retro band, “The Edsels” from 5:30 till 8:30 p.m.

In closing, I should mention we have several great organizations sponsoring our event, including Dick’s Drive-In and Harbor Square Fitness Club. Of special note, two additional sponsors are also celebrating their 125th Anniversaries: Bartell Drugs and Washington State University. Representatives will be there to join in the festivities.

This will be a special day; come join us!
