A total of nine unlimited hydroplanes qualified Friday for this weekend’s Gold Cup hydroplane race in the Tri-Cities. Three boats did not qualify but will have a chance Saturday morning before the racing starts at 2:30 p.m. Each boat will run in two preliminary heats Saturday and two more preliminary heats Sunday. Following all those heats, a winner-take-all final heat will be run Sunday afternoon.
Our local hydroplane, Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May, was one of the qualifiers and is set to run hard in this, the granddaddy of all racing events in the country. The Gold Cup was established in 1904 and is being run in the Tri-Cities for the first time in 30 years. It is also the 50th anniversary of hydroplane racing in the Tri-Cities.
Here is a list of the 13 boats, with drivers and qualifying times as of Friday afternoon.
