The Edmonds Historical Museum on Saturday officially dedicated a time capsule to be opened in 2040 as part of the 150th anniversary celebration of the founding of Edmonds.

Items chosen by the fourth grade students to go in the time capsule include a cup from Revelations Yogurt, a ticket for the Edmonds Theater, a ferry schedule and an autographed photo of Rick Steves.

The capsule will be placed at the base of the bell tower in the new Edmonds Museum Plaza at 118 Fifth Ave. N.

Earlier this year, the fourth grade class at Edmonds’ Holy Rosary School volunteered to work with the Edmonds/South Snohomish County Historical Society to select items that reflect life in Edmonds in 2015. Washington State History is part of the fourth grade curriculum for all students in Washington. In addition to these items, the capsule contains three student essays, the result of a contest held earlier this year — open to all Edmonds fourth-graders attending public or private school or who are homeschooled — that identified the three most important events in Edmonds’ history and why were they important.

Essay contest winners included Maura Canney and Peyson Smith of Holy Rosary and Jessie Tong of Terrace Park K-8 School.

  1. It was good to see the students and their parents. The students had enjoyed a speaker about Edmonds history. Their essays reflected what they had learned. Nice museum project!
