verdant logoThe Verdant Health Commission is sponsoring the following classes and programs in November at the Verdant Community Wellness Center, 4710 196th St. S.W. in Lynnwood. The Anti-Inflammatory Diet: What Foods Turn Off Inflammation?
Do you experience chronic inflammation? Did you know that your diet can help you lower body inflammation? Come to this talk if you want to learn what foods may help you feel better and have more energy and zest for life! Takes place from 1-2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.

Strategies for Beating the Holiday Blues
Sometimes the winter holidays cause people to struggle with sadness, anxiety and other painful feelings. Exploring this common occurrence in a supportive group can help create a different kind of experience for the season. We will use art-making and other creative outlets to explore, connect and share within a safe and supportive group setting. This free group meets 10 weeks on Wednesdays, from Nov. 4, 2015 through Jan. 6, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. For more information, contact the YWCA at 425-412-2364.

Winter Wellness
Join Dr. Liz Snapinn from PacMed’s Lynnwood Clinic to learn how to ward off health issues (such as weight gain and depression) associated with long, dark days. This class will also touch on winter exercise, preventing injuries with snow and ice, as well as tips to prevent seasonal colds and flu. Flu vaccines will be available, to interested people, at no cost during this class as well. This free class takes place from 6-7 p.m. (flu shots start at 5:30 p.m.) on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Diabetes Prevention: Tips for Reducing Your Risk
Do you have a family history of diabetes, a personal history of gestational diabetes or are just curious about learning how to lower your risk for developing diabetes? Join us for practical lifestyle strategies, science-based information and sampling of healthy snacks for better blood sugar control. Takes place 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18.

The Carb Conundrum
Confused by all the mixed messages about food and your body? Join Katherine Figel, Registered Dietician from PacMed’s Living Well Alliance Program, to learn the real story on what carbs are, how your body uses them, what foods contain them and why either avoiding them or overloading on them may not be the best choice for your health. Runs from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Day
You are not alone. Join with a community of suicide loss survivors to find comfort and gain understanding as we share stories of healing and hope. International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people who are affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities for support, information and empowerment. This year’s program includes a screening of “Family Journeys: Healing and Hope after a Suicide,” a new documentary produced by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that traces the ripple effect of a suicide through families and communities, and explores the challenges we face as we cope and heal. This free program takes place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. Register online at www.survivorday.org.
