Scene nearby: Edmonds police chief bids fond farewell to Lynnwood’s Jensen

Edmonds Police Chief Al Compaan attended the retirement celebration Tuesday for Lynnwood Police Chief Steven Jensen. Jensen has worked in law enforcement for over 45 years and has spent the last 21 years as Lynnwood’s police chief. Compaan explained Tuesday that he became the Edmonds Police Chief after then-Chief David Stern unexpectedly passed away. After stepping up in a sudden time of loss, Compaan said Jensen served as a mentor. He then noted the cities scraped together enough funds to purchase a special award for Jensen, and pulled a folded piece of paper, labeled a “Certificate of Appreciation,” out of his breast pocket. Jensen laughed and said Compaan knows he is “not a collector of plaques.” Poking a bit of fun at the retiring Jensen, the Certificate of Appreciation listed taking revenue dollars from neighboring cities, testing out red light cameras before the other cities purchased them, building a traffic unit that stops all traffic before it reaches Edmonds, and being an all-around great guy and friend.
