The Edmonds Port Commission in a special meeting Wednesday morning voted unanimously to appoint long-time Edmonds resident Steven A. Johnston to the commissioner at large position No. 5, vacated earlier this year with the retirement of Mary Lou Block.

The Port of Edmonds on Wednesday interviewed three candidates for the position: Johnston, Michael F. Jones and Eric B. Livingston. The commission then went into executive session to discuss the qualifications of the applicants.

Reconvening the meeting, Commission President Bruce Faires thanked all the applicants, then opened the floor for nominations. Johnston was nominated, and the motion passed unanimously, after which Port of Edmonds attorney Brad Cattle administered the oath of office.

A long-time Edmonds resident, Johnson retired in 2013 after serving as CEO of Edmonds-based engineering and environmental consulting firm Landau and Associates. A Port Commission announcement Wednesday noted that Johnson “has experience working in the Edmonds community, as well as working alongside the Port of Edmonds on projects relating to the waterfront and Harbor Square.”

Port of Edmonds staff and commissioners “look forward to working with Commissioner Johnston and are excited about the expertise and benefits he will bring to the Port of Edmonds community,” the announcement said.

Johnston will fill out the remainder of Block’s term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2017, said Port Commission Executive Director Bob McChesney. He could also choose to run for re-election to the position in November 2017.

The Edmonds Port District comprises an area bounded on the south by the King-Snohomish County line, on the east by 92nd Street Southwest, and on the west by Puget Sound. The point where the extension of 92nd and the shoreline meet is the district’s northernmost point.

  1. Congratulations Steve! I know you will do an excellent job! And you thought you had retired.
