Ask the Edmonds Cop: Police response to unincorporated Edmonds

You have an Edmonds address but discover you live in unincorporated Snohomish County. Edmonds Police Sgt. Shane Hawley explains why that matters in terms of police response.
  1. There are times that Edmonds Police respond to non Edmonds location. For example the death in Woodway involved a great deal of Edmonds police work. I believe we have a contract with Woodway to do work for them and bill them for the work if it goes beyond some minimal amount. I have not seen anything that shows how much we billed for our services in that death investigation.

    1. Woodway currently pays Edmonds $3060/month for up to 10 police response calls, with an additional $100 per 15 minutes on additional calls. This applies to times when no Woodway officer is on duty. (Calls for backup or other situations are provided under agreements that allow local departments to assist one another.)

  2. Thanks Bryan, using that formula it would appear that the $100 per 15 minutes would have kicked in to pay for the work Edmonds police did relating to that death in Woodway. Without doing a public records request does anyone know of an easy way to look up what we billed Woodway for those services?

  3. As much as I support our local law enforcement I have learned that being in unincorporated Edmonds and relying on County Deputies I need to be prepared to protect myself and my family. We had a situation awhile back where a neighbor was beating his wife and she was screaming for help. We called 911 and they dispatched a Sheriff. It took 98min for them to show up. After waiting for 10min and seeing nobody I ended up arming myself and going over and pulling her out of the house at gunpoint to get her away from him. This is something that really needs to be fixed even if Edmonds contracts with us like they do with Woodway.
