Edmonds-Woodway High School senior Yukino Parle has qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN), one of the most prestigious high school cross country events in the nation, to be run on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Portland, Ore.
Parle earned a spot at NXN based upon her finish at the NXR Northwest Regional Championships race held Saturday in Boise, Idaho. Parle completed the 5,000 meter course at Eagle Island State Park in a time of 17:49.40, good enough for sixth place among more than 800 runners competing at the event.
Parle will be one of 199 female runners running at the NIKE Cross Nationals and the only one from Washington state to automatically qualify for the event based upon her finish at a regional meet.
Parle has had a stellar running career as a Warrior with top-seven individual finishes at the WIAA 3A State Cross Country Championships each of the past three years. In addition, she won the 3200 meters at the WIAA 3A State Track and Field Championships last May and will be considered one of the favorites in the event again next spring.
Though not earning a spot at the national meet, Parle’s E-W teammate Olivia Meader Yetter did run well at the NIKE regional meet in Boise, finishing in 33rd place.
The NIKE Cross Nationals on Dec. 2 will be held on a 5,000 meter course at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland; the girls’ championship race is scheduled to be run at 11:35 a.m. The event will be streamed live at nikecrossnationals.com.
