The month of love is a good time to bring out our red lipstick for Valentine’s Day celebrations. As the darker shades of lipstick draw attention to our lips, it can also enhance pesky lip lines and fine wrinkles in the lips. Lip dehydration and lip lines can start to become noticeable as early as the late 20s and can escalate to vertical lip lines around the mouth as women approach their late 30s and 40s.
Protect your pucker
Don’t forget to use sun protection on your lips! Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to a study by Richard Wagner, MD, on skin cancer awareness, 94 percent of participants were aware of damage caused by UV exposure, but only 6 percent were aware of the risk of cancer on the lips. Find a lip balm with SPF and reapply frequently and be sure to avoid ultra-shiny lip gloss while you’re soaking up those rays.
Your lips appear plumper and smoother when you drink plenty of water, so make sure that you are getting your 64 ounces per day. You can also hydrate your lips with a rich botanical lip balm or plumping gloss. Many plumping products contain hyaluronic acid, which helps to attract hydration and give a subtle plumping effect.
Plump your pout
You can achieve semi-permanent lip hydration with dermal fillers. Dermal filler, used for lip hydration and enhancement, is a smooth injectable gel. Often, the product is a hyaluronic acid base, which is strategically injected into the lips to enhance your natural lip shape and give you more fullness. Results from dermal fillers vary, however most people achieve results that last from six months to a year. Consult your cosmetic dermatology provider for a recommendation on the best treatment option for you, ensuring that you get the best results.
Regardless of how you choose to enhance your lips this Valentine’s Day, make sure that you treat yourself. If you choose to stick with tradition, don’t forget that a glass red wine can be good for your heart and goes well with anti-oxidant rich dark chocolate!
