The last home game for Tyler Ackerman, Grantland Over, Spencer Linton, Matt Hirsch, Brian Feldhaus and Torin Dooley was a must-win. The Mavs closed out the clinching game against a tough Marysville-Getchell Charger team, and forced a one-game playoff versus Everett to determine the final district playoff team. Linton contributed 19 big points on Senior Night to help the Mavs win. On the Getchell side, Nathen Grimm was the main reason they were in it for so long, scoring 22 points to lead all scorers in a tough loss.

The first quarter started quickly for the Mavs, with a 7-0 run thanks to two quick baskets by Feldhaus and a three by Linton. As they tried to add to that lead, M-G’s Ali Al-Azadi blocked a Linton floater that went to Grimm for a breakaway jumper to make it 7-2. With the game at 10-6 Meadowdale with 3:00 to go, Jordan Russell-Robinson swished a three over the Maverick defense to cut the lead to one. As the Chargers went for the lead, Collin Costello knocked the ball loose to force one of the six turnovers the Chargers had in the half up to Dooley, who got it back to Costello for an easy lay-in. The Mavs led 14-9 at the end of the first.

The Chargers started the second quarter with Grimm cutting through the Maverick defense and one-handing a finger roll in to make it 14-11. The Mavs came back when Hirsch drove to the basket and missed a lay-in, but Charlie White got the rebound and hit the putback to make it 18-11. The Mavs extended the lead to 22-14 when Dooley stole a pass away that led to a few missed shots on the offensive side, but it eventually ended when Hirsch hit a putback.

The score was 24-21 with two minutes to play before the Mavs exploded for nine points. The nine came from a Linton drive and lay-up while being fouled, and he sank the free throw. Then Dooley closed out the half by finally getting on the scoresheet when he hit back-to-back threes, and the Mavs led 33-21 at the end of the half.

The Chargers came out strong to start the second half. Grimm hit an early three, and Getchell got to within six before Costello hit a tough jumper with a guy in his face to make it 37-29 Meadowdale. The Chargers came storming back when they found open lanes through the Mav defense, yet the Mavs maintained their eight-point lead. On one possession, Meadowdale missed five straight shots but grabbed five rebounds in a row before Linton finally scored a putback to take a 41-33 lead. Then Hirsch drove from the corner and hit a lay-in to make it 45-35.

The fourth quarter started well enough for the Mavs. The team built up a 61-44 lead with 2:53 left to play thanks to Dooley, Linton and White all contributing big buckets. However, Getchell started playing a defense similar to the Lady Mavs (which is double-teaming the person catching the inbounds pass), and it worked. They got two quick buckets to cut the deficit to 13. A three by Al-Azadi closed the gap to 62-52 with 1:52 left to play.

Thanks to the Mavs only shooting 12 for 24 from the charity stripe, the Chargers kept at it. Josh Thompson hit a three to make the score 66-59 with 40.7 seconds left to go, but the Mavs were able to close out the game with a 67-61 win.

With the victory, the Mavs (7-14, 5-11 in conference) have forced a one-game playoff against Everett on Monday, at Everett, at 7:15 p.m., with the winner playing Mountlake Terrace in the first round of districts on Feb. 8.

Meadowdale Scoreboard: Kenley Ackerman 3; Charlie White 4; Collin Costello 10; Barrett Carlow 1; Tyler Ackerman 1; Spencer Linton 19; Matt Hirsch 7; Brian Feldhaus 10; Torin Dooley 12

Sports correspondent Quint Turner is a sophomore at Meadowdale High School.

Marysville-Getchell Scorers: Zander Seymer 8; Nathen Grimm 22; Josh Thompson 5; Omar Sakin-Romulus 6; Spencer Winters 7; Jordan Russell-Robinson 5; Ali Al-Azadi 8

In their final game of the regular season, the Edmonds-Woodway high school girls basketball team stayed close to the Wesco South leading Jackson for three quarters, but the Timberwolves proved too much for the young Warrior squad, pulling away for a 53-38 win on E-W’s home court Thursday night.

In the first quarter the Warriors struggled to finish an offensive set with a bucket, but were able to fight back and get several consecutive stops preventing the Timberwolves, who are 12-1 in conference, from running away early. The Warriors were able to string together some baskets finishing with a Madeline Kasper steal and outlet to freshman sister Natalie Kasper, who scored to tie the game at 9 at the end of the first quarter.

Jackson’s defense around the perimeter effectively took away steps and knocked the E-W guards off balance. On several possessions, the Warriors would move the ball around the top, only to lose it on errant passes and the quick hands of the Timberwolves’ defense. The Warriors finished Thursday night’s game with 22 turnovers.

In the third quarter, E-W was able to notch its way back into the game and eventually take a 30-29 lead, capitalizing on some very strong defensive stops and a few Jackson miscued passes. But the Warrior girls couldn’t overcome a strong Jackson fourth, when they were outscored 18-8.

The E-W girls will play at home on Tuesday night in the first game of the 2012 district tournament, opponent to be determined.

Edmonds-Woodway Scoreboard: Madeline Kasper 14, Sidney Eck 7, Natalie Kasper 11, Samone Jackson 1, Seyi Olajoyegbe 4, Claire Fyfe 1

Blake Fernandez led all scorers with 15 and five Hawks scored at least eight points. The game was at Meadowdale, but the Terrace fans took over and made the Hawks feel at home. Torin Dooley scored 14 to lead the Mavericks.

The first quarter started well enough for Meadowdale. Two minutes in, Dooley had a great drive through the stingy Hawk defense and finger-rolled a shot in to make it 4-2. Eric Moisant saw that, and responded by draining a three. The Hawks only shot 4 for 15 from beyond the arc, but they made up for it with lots of field goals. A few minutes after that three, Moisant caught an offensive rebound and put it back to make it a 9-3 game. Then Greg Bowman capped the 9-1 run with a three of his own to make it a 13-3.

But the Mavs weren’t out of it yet. Dooley hit a three to make it just 15-9. However, Terrace continued to score by spreading the ball around. Dooley tried again to get MHS back in it when he faked a pass at the top of the key, then drove through everyone for a lay-in and cut the deficit to 19-12. The Mavs were down 23-13 after the quarter though.

The Mavs got outscored 19-3 in the second. Now, you’d think that the reason for such a low-scoring quarter was lots of turnovers, but it was the Terrace defense putting a hand in the face of any open shots for Meadowdale. Right away, the Hawks went on a 6-0 run, which included a spin move by Fernandez for easy access to the bucket, and then Bowman floated a pass down to Coby Russell, who scored a tough lay-up in traffic to make it 27-13. Dooley scored the only field goal for the Mavs on a mid-range jumper with 4:30 left and it was 29-15. Right after, the Hawks went on another 6-0 run, capped off by a great isolation move by Marquis Armstead to get around the D and hit a lay-in to make it 35-15.

Spencer Linton took a nasty spill after missing a midrange floater, and he came up limping. He’d be taken out of the game for the quarter, but came back in the third. The Hawks closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run. That was capped off when Russell took a pass at midcourt and went on a breakaway. He threw down a two-handed slam a few seconds before the buzzer, and it was 42-16 Hawks at the end of the half.

The third was more of the same for the Hawks. On Linton’s first shift back, he stole the ball at midcourt, went on a breakaway, and hit an easy lay-up to make it 44-20. But Fernandez imitated the move and he drove through traffic and hit a lay-in. Then it was Moisant again as he swished a three, then stole the ball and went on a breakaway for another two points, and it was 53-22 with 4:15 left. Kenley Ackerman of the Mavs scored his only field goal of the game when he drove by the Hawk defense, thanks to a sweet crossover move, and he hit a finger-roll to get the score to 55-22. Armstead hit a lay-in just before the quarter ended, and it was 63-24 MTHS at the end of three.

The Mavs outscored the Hawks 12-9 in the fourth. Dooley had a ridiculous lay-up when he shifted his entire weight from one foot to the other while going up, and he was fouled as well. He hit the free throw, and the Mavs cut the deficit to 63-27. Then the Mavs went on a 6-0 run after another Hawk bucket that was capped by Colin Costello clowning the Hawk D with a one handed lay-in after a nifty move to get open, making it 65-33. That would be the closest the Mavs came to coming back though, and they lost 72-36.

With the win, the Hawks are now 19-0 (15-0 in conference), and their final game of the season is at Shorewood this Saturday, at 7:15 p.m. With the loss, the Mavs fall to 6-14 (4-11 in conference). Meadowdale has their last game at home, vs. Marysville-Getchell on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Meadowdale Scoreboard: Kenley Ackerman 2; Charlie White 1; Collin Costello 3; Tyler Ackerman 2; Grantland Over 2; Spencer Linton 2; Matt Hirsch 8; Brian Feldhaus 2; Torin Dooley 14

The Snohomish County Basketball Officials Association (SCBOA) has nominated Edmonds-Woodway High School point guard Devin Joseph for the group’s Player of the Year Award.

SCBOA has made a point to recognize good sportsmanship during games. At the end of the season, the group presents an award to one player and one coach who meets the criteria of demonstrating great sportsmanship and courtesy toward officials, opponents and teammates, as well as great skill and effort on the court.

“Devin is an excellent team captain,” the group said. “He is a very supportive and encouraging teammate. He asks intelligent rules questions when dealing with officials and accepts the responses without debate. He plays hard, but always with great sportsmanship in dealing with opponents. Great kid and a good player too!”
