Kamiak outduels Meadowdale 1-0 in soccer

Stringing together a three-game winning streak, Kamiak outdueled Meadowdale 1-0 Tuesday night, thanks to senior forward Spencer Kienholz’s dramatic goal (Tyler Hawkinson assist) at the 78-minute mark. With the league win, Kamiak kept pace with Edmonds-Woodway and Jackson, as all three teams are tied for first in WesCo 4A South Division, in which the top three 4A teams earn automatic District 1 playoff spots.

The Mavericks had some chances on goal with a corner kick at the 17-minute mark, but couldn’t convert. An even larger Mavericks’ scoring opportunity came knocking literally on the Knights’ door at the 30th minute, as Meadowdale’s Daniel Kwan, Spencer Valior and Solomon Stewart got the ball to top of goal box and kept pounding on Kamiak goal, only to be turned away by Kamiak. The Knights’ many runs proved equally futile and the half ended in scoreless tie.

Meadowdale had another golden opportunity 13 minutes in to the second half in the form of a free kick at the top of the penalty area due to a handball call against a Kamiak defender, but the Knights escaped unscathed. When it seemed like an overtime period was inevitable, Hawkinson crossed the ball from the left and Kienholz punched it through the hands of Meadowdale goalkeeper Kenny Hill for the game winner with two minutes left in the game.
