Edmonds Mayor: Plunkett won’t pursue City Manager form of government

Edmonds Mayor Gary Haakenson sent out a message via Twitter early Monday morning that Councilmember Michael Plunkett won’t pursue a change from a mayor-led to a city manager form of government at this time, “due to other demands on Council workload.”

Plunkett first introduced the proposal to the Council last week. The next step was to be a public hearing, after which the Council would decide whether to put the matter before citizen, possibly on the November ballot.

At the time that he floated the idea several weeks ago, Plunkett said that he believed the timing was right to introduce such a measure, since Haakenson is nearing the end of his third term and has already stated he doesn’t plan to run again. (Haakenson’s term expires at the end of 2011.)

A poll posted on My Edmonds News Friday indicated that a majority — 67 percent — were opposed to the idea (a total of 54 people voting so far).
