The Edmonds-Woodway doubles team of Michelle Nelson and Amanda Waldron finished their high school tennis careers in fine form at the state 4A tennis tournament in Kennewick Saturday, winning the consolation championship match and bringing home a fourth-place medal.
The E-W seniors, who were making their third appearance at the state tournament, started off with a 6-4, 6-2 win Friday over Eliana Sperio and Niki Skinner of Kentwood. Nelson and Waldron lost their next match, (5-7, 3-6) to Chaeran Kim and Jenna Grillo from Mountain View, which put them into the consolation bracket. The Warrior girls bounced back to win their next two contests, beating Chelsea Motzer and Lani Sherman from Mead (6-3, 6-3) and Kelly Watanabe and Jess Lund from Lake Washington (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. That put them into the consolation championship, where they defeated Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco from Oak Harbor, 6-1, 6-2 for fourth place.
In other Warriors girls tennis action, doubles teammates Sophie Roben and Sarah Fine were eliminated after losing to Tianna Cummings and Presley Peck from Walla Walla, 3-6, 0-6, and Lake Washington’s Watanabe and Lund, 1-6, 0-6. E-W singles player Jane Hong also lost her first two matches, 0-6, 0-6 to Corrine Wurden from Central Kitsap and 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 to Averi Kitsch from Thomas Jefferson.
On the boys’ side, E-W senior Jake Lagucik and his junior partner Youngha Kim dropped their first match to Makoa Rosa and Kainoa Rosa from Thomas Jefferson, 3-6, 0-6, but won their next contest, beating Tom Geranious and Marshal McNally from Ferris, 2-6, 5-7. Lagucik and Kim then lost a close match to Kennan Dolan and James Lee from Bellarmine Prep, 6-7, 5-7, which eliminated them from the tournament.
In the 3A state tennis tournament in Vancouver, Meadowdale singles player Jose Dow lost her first match to Lauren McCann of Capital, 7-6 (11), 5-7, 1-0 (2), then defeated Lisa Kromholtz of Peninsula 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (7). Dow was eliminated from the tourney in the third round, losing to Kilee Beuse from Sedro-Woolley, 6-7 (4), 2-6. The Meadowdale boys doubles team of Scott Boemke and Grant Lovell beat Evan Segnirant/Nikhil Das of North Thurston, 7-6 (8), 6-1, but lost to eventual state champions Andrew LaCava/Jason Bediones of Seattle Prep, 1-6, 2-6. In the consolation round, Boemke and Lovell defeated Jack Li and Colin Jones of Hazen, 6-1, 7-5, then lost to Jacob Yannello and Joel Richardson of Lakes, 1-6, 2-6.
