Edmonds Mayor Mike Cooper sent out this important reminder Tuesday: Edmonds is celebrating its 120th birthday today.
On August 11, 1890 the Snohomish County Commissioners officially designated the 600-acre town site as the “Town of Edmonds, and George Brackett was elected the town’s first mayor.
“According to local legend, George Brackett was two signatures short on the petition to the county and signed the names of his oxen Bolivar and Issac,” said Cooper, adding that an investigation by the County Auditor failed to find evidence to support the story, so the city was formed.
“A lot has changed since 1890, but our city’s charm and character remains,” Cooper noted.
Well said, Mr. Mayor, and Happy Birthday, Edmonds!
